BROTHERS CHARGED WITH MURDER, ARSON

Two brothers from Bluefield, W.Va., have been charged with arson and capital murder in the death of a 77-year-old Bland County woman last week.

William James Buchanan, 58, and Fred Ray Buchanan, 48, were arrested late Tuesday on charges stemming from the death of Claudine Waddell. Her body was found last Thursday in the burned remains of her home.

Special Agent Carroll Delp with the Virginia State Police said robbery appears to have been the motive, with the fire apparently set to cover the slaying.

An autopsy showed that Waddell had not died in the fire, as generally believed, but had been killed by a knife wound to the throat. She lived alone in the Waddelltown section of the county on Virginia 617.

Delp said the arrests followed information developed by investigators over the weekend.
