W.VA. MAN HELD AFTER FATAL CRASH

Derek Brett McCollum of St. Albans, W.Va., remained Wednesday in the Botetourt County Jail on charges that he caused a Saturday traffic accident that killed a Florida man.

McCollum, 35, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence, driving without an operator's license and leaving the scene of an accident, according to State Trooper G.K. Straub.

Straub said McCollum was driving north on Interstate 81 near the U.S. 220 exit at Daleville when he lost control of his car while attempting to pass a tractor-trailer. McCollum's car entered the median, bounced back onto the highway and struck the front of the truck.

The truck jackknifed and ended up perpendicular across the interstate lanes, said Straub.

Gilbert G. Machon, 81, of New Port Richey, Fla., was killed when his car struck the truck's trailer.

Straub said McCollum was stopped about 20 miles north of the accident by a Botetourt County sheriff's deputy.

McCollum is being held on $7,000 bond.
