MUSSER REMAINS IN ROANOKE RACE

Roanoke City Councilman Howard Musser has been discharged from Lewis-Gale Hospital after being there two months recovering from a stroke.

Musser said Wednesday he will have home care for two weeks and then undergo treatment as an outpatient.

The stroke affected his left side and he does not have full control over his arm and leg. He uses a wheelchair, but he said he can walk with the aid of a walker.

Musser, 63, works daily with a therapist to regain use of his left arm and leg.

The candidate for commissioner of revenue in Tuesday's election said he is still in the race.

If he continues to improve, Musser said, he will be able to handle the commissioner's duties by Jan. 1, when he would take office.

"Provided the therapy works, I think I could do it," he said. "It depends on that."

Musser, a Democrat who is running as an independent, opposes Democrat Marsha Fielder. Republicans did not nominate a candidate.

Incumbent Jerome Howard, a Republican who has held the post for 28 years, is not seeking re-election.

Fielder has not made Musser's health an issue. She suspended her campaign for several days when Musser was first hospitalized. Musser suffered the stroke Aug. 21 and has not been able to campaign.

He said Wednesday he might make a campaign appearance before the election. He hopes to attend City Council's meeting on Monday.

Musser said he also is considering mailing campaign literature to voters.

He has not attended a council meeting since August, but council approved a resolution this week excusing him from the meetings because of illness. Without such a resolution, Musser would have lost his council seat because he has missed five consecutive meetings.
