IN SCHOOL

THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA SCHOOL OF MEDICINE has announced the names of Roanoke Valley residents in the first graduating class of its Roanoke-Salem Psychiatric Medicine Residency Program. They are Drs. R. Pryor Baird, Lisa Capell, Bradford Felker and Edward Workman.

The program offers training at the VA Medical Center in Salem, Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Catawba Hospital, and Mental Health Services of the Roanoke Valley to prepare graduates for careers in clinical, academic and research psychiatry.

\ DAVE BRUNSON of Roanoke has received a certificate of recognition for significant contributions to education in Virginia from Virginia Tech's College of Education. Brunson, an industrial manufacturing specialist at Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville, is recognized for his automated manufacturing systems project that he created for students enrolled in the engineering technologies program.

\ "ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION," a program at Fishburn Park WEB Elementary Magnet School, is one of 18 programs to receive the 1993 Excellence in Education Award from Virginia Tech.

The program includes special activities and studies related to the environment. Students were involved in outdoor and indoor studies and helped with a backyard habitat and pond. They also designed and painted a mural. This year's project includes building a classroom in a greenhouse and an outdoor classroom.

\ NORTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL'S MARCHING BAND, the "Pride of Northside," recently received first-place flags, first-place rifles, first-place percussion, Best Band in their division, and Spirit of the Day awards at the third annual Greensboro Invitational Marching Band Festival.
