BRENDA RYALS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard C. Morgan Jr. of Roanoke, has been named a fellow of the American Speech and Hearing Association. This designation is given to fewer than 2 percent of the association's 70,000 members.

Ryals, an associate professor of audiology at James Madison University, was recognized for her clinical services, teaching, research and publication, and service to the association.

\ ENGINEERING DESIGN SYSTEMS INC. of Roanoke is one of six U.S. dealers recognized for providing superior customer support and service by Autodesk Inc., a software manufacturer. This is the second year that the firm, which sells hardware and software used in manufacturing, engineering and architectural designs, has received the honor.

\ WALLY and KATHERINE HILLMAN of Roanoke recently were honored for their outstanding achievement in sales group sponsorship during Amsoil Inc.'s 20th anniversary convention in Duluth, Minn. Amsoil pioneered the synthetic motor oil industry in 1972.

\ JANE JOHNSON, director of education for the Credit Marketing & Management Association in Roanoke, has been recognized as an associate credit executive by the Society of Certified Credit Executives, a division of International Credit Association.

Johnson has fulfilled the society's requirement for professional experience in the consumer credit field and demonstration of professional association activity.

\ DONNA R. HAMPTON recently was promoted to consumer credit officer and systems analyst at First Union National Bank's Consumer Collection Center in Roanoke.

Hampton previously worked as a consumer credit project analyst at Dominion Bank's Bankcard Center.

\ CHARLES R. RAKES and STEVEN B. RAKES, both of Roanoke, qualified for and recently attended Standard Life and Accident Insurance Co.'s 1993 marketing conference in Lake Tahoe, Nev.

Field representatives who have had superior sales and service during the past year qualify for the conference.

\ ROBERT HALE, president of Robert Hale Piano Service, has received a pin recognizing his 25 years of service as a registered craftsman of the Technicians Guild.

The award was presented at the guild's national convention in Milwaukee. The guild is made up of qualified tuner/technicians who have passed several examinations.

\ SERVISTAR RETAILERS, Brambleton Hardware, Hollins Hardware Company Inc. and Delta Supply Inc. are participating in "Tools for Tomorrow," an education support program for vocational and technical students. The retailers will recognize the accomplishments and contributions of Roanoke-area vocational students and support vocational education programs.

\ DAVID KILLIAN, an assistant actuary with Shenandoah Life Insurance Company of Roanoke, has been named an associate of the Society of Actuaries. He earned the ASA designation by successfully completing a series of examinations administered by the society.

\ THE ACHIEVEMENT CENTER, a school for children with learning disabilities in Roanoke, recently received a $5,000 grant from the Allstate Foundation. The grant will be used for equipment in the computer lab.

\ PAUL J. CURRAN, the Edward D. Jones & Co. investment representative in Salem, has become a limited partner of The Jones Financial Cos. Curran has been with the organization since 1987 and will continue serving Salem in his new capacity.

The Jones Financial Cos. is the holding company for the St. Louis-based financial-services firm.

\ DONALD HELMS, senior manager of AVCO Financial Services' Roanoke No. 3, Virginia office, is a recipient of the American Financial Services Association's 1993 Merit Manager Award.

The award is presented annually to branch managers of association member companies who have demonstrated outstanding management skills and have translated those skills into company profits.

Helms joined AVCO in April 1989 and was promoted to manager of the Roanoke office in May 1991.

\ THOMAS A. MASON, independent agency manager of Allstate Insurance Company's Electric Road location, has been designated a certified insurance counselor. The distinction follows successful completion of an insurance education program sponsored by the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors.
