TIMESLAND RUNNERS REACH STATE

Three Timesland runners qualified for the Group AAA state cross country meet with top 15 finishes Thursday in the Northwestern Region meet at Darden Towe Park in Charlottesville.

The top 15 individuals and top four teams qualified for the state meet Nov. 6 at Virginia Tech. Among the boys will be Franklin County's David Angel, who finished sixth with a time of 16 minutes, 34 seconds, and Cave Spring's Jason Dowdy, who was 12th at 16:51. Representing Timesland schools in the girls' meet will be Jennifer Pohlig of Pulaski County, who was third at 19:28.

Cave Spring's teams just missed qualifying. The Knights' boys' and girls' teams each finished fifth among 12 teams on the 3.1-mile course.

Stafford won the boys' title with 55 points, followed by North Stafford (79), Woodbridge (83) and Gar-Field (96). Cave Spring was fifth with 129 points, Franklin County was seventh with 184 and Pulaski County finished tied for 11th with 321 points. The individual champion was Will Palmer of Stafford in 16:04.

The girls' championship went to Hylton with 39 points, followed by E.C. Glass (103), Gar-Field (128) and Woodbridge (131). Cave Spring had 133 points in placing fifth. Pulaski County was 10th with 245 points, and Franklin County was 12th with 318. Stacey Carpenter of Hylton won in 19:11.

Cave Spring's top finishers were Claire Rotramel (19th in 20:58), Laura Henry (21st in 21:05) and Molly Rutherford (23rd at 21:08).

In other high school sports:

Jeremy Cosgriff and Kevin Nolan placed among the top three in the boys' competition, and Bethany Eigel won the girls' competition as Christiansburg took the boys' and girls' team titles in the Region IV cross country meet at Radford University.

Cosgriff finished second behind Jason Kwun of Tazewell, who turned in a winning time of 16:48. Nolan finished third. The Blue Demons won 34-76 over Blacksburg, claiming their fifth consecutive Region IV title.

Eigel won the girls' title by nine seconds over Colleen Crawford of Abingdon. The Blue Demons beat 1992 Group AA champion Blacksburg 39-61 to earn their first Region IV title.

Nick Burroughs, a Blacksburg running back and defensive back, will miss the rest of the season because of torn ligaments and cartilage damage in his left knee.

After two weeks of therapy, Burroughs will undergo surgery on the knee, said Indians coach David Crist.

Burroughs has been a key player for Blacksburg. For most of the year he alternated at tailback, where he gained 329 yards on 63 carries. In a 23-0 New River District victory over Christiansburg on Friday, the game in which he was hurt, Burroughs had five carries for 61 yards in the first half. He has scored five touchdowns, one on a pass reception.

As a defensive back, he was one of the heroes of the Indians' victory over Radford when he intercepted four passes.

Burroughs was injured while blocking on a punt return during the first half of the Christiansburg game. Another player who was being blocked fell into his knee.

Burroughs also is a key performer for the Indians' track team as a 400- and 800-meter specialist. His status for that sport is uncertain.
