ROANOKE IN ODAC SEMIFINALS TODAY

Roanoke College's men's soccer team faces Eastern Mennonite at 3 p.m. today at Alumni Field in a semifinal of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament.

The Maroons, ranked No. 22 in the nation, are trying to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time. The ODAC tournament champion gets an automatic bid to the playoffs. The ODAC final is 2 p.m. Saturday at Alumni Field.

Virginia Tech defensive tackle Bernard Basham, who has started three football games for the Hokies, won't play Saturday against East Carolina because of two sprained ankles, trainer Eddie Ferrell said.

Basham, a Roanoke native and one of Tech's co-captains, has 30 tackles (ninth on the team) and two sacks. He was injured against Rutgers. Redshirt freshman Waverly Jackson and sophomore J.C. Price are listed as the starting defensive tackles for Saturday's 1 p.m. game at Lane Stadium.

The Washington and Lee women's doubles team of Marilyn Baker and Julie Ayers advanced to today's semifinals in the Rolex National Small College tennis championships. Baker and Ayers beat Trenton State's Sarah Bartlett and Jennifer Lardiere 6-2, 6-2 in a quarterfinal.

Old Dominion, the coaches' pick to win the Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball title, suffered a blow when the Monarchs announced forward Mario Mullen will undergo back surgery Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C.

Mullen, 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds, started every game last season and was selected to the All-CAA rookie team. He was injured in an automobile wreck in May. The injury did not respond to various treatments, and doctors determined last week that Mullen has a ruptured disk. Coach Oliver Purnell said the most optimistic prediction is that Mullen will miss eight weeks of action. "It's questionable whether he'll be back at all this season," Purnell said.

The annual Liberty University "Midnight Madness" men's and women's basketball scrimmage exhibition will begin at 10:30 p.m. Saturday. The women's team will start the proceedings with a 30-minute exhibition. A men's slam-dunk contest will lead into the introduction of the men's team. The agenda also includes entertainment by the cheerleaders, pep band and mascot.
