EXPRESS TOPS CHECKERS 7-5

Pat Ferschweiler had the first hat trick in Express history and Ilja Dubkov added two goals as Roanoke defeated the Charlotte Checkers 7-5 on Thursday night in an East Coast Hockey League game at Independence Arena.

The game marked the first road victory for the Express.

Two goals by Ferschweiler 12 seconds apart early in the third period, both from close range, gave the Express a three-goal lead for the second time, 6-3.

After a rebound goal by Charlotte's Geoff Simpson cut it to 6-4, Dubkov scored on a short-handed, end-to-end rush with a backhand past Checkers goaltender Scott Bailey at the 11-minute, 58-second mark.

A short-handed goal by Charlotte's Matty Robbins finished the scoring.

Gairin Smith's five-minute major penalty for high-sticking Roanoke's Kyle Galloway with 6:27 to play finished the Checkers.

Charlotte (2-3-0) lost for the second time in two nights.

Roanoke's Oleg Yashin opened the scoring in the first period, banging home the rebound of a shot by Will Averill from the top of the left faceoff circle at 12:09. Averill was making his first appearance for the Express.

Dubkov added a power-play goal, flicking a backhand from behind the net off of Bailey to give Roanoke a 2-0 lead.

Ferschweiler made it 3-0 by converting a crossing pass from Tony Szabo at 18:06 while being dumped to the ice by Checkers defenseman Joe Cleary.

Two goals by Charlotte forward Scott MacNair three minutes apart tied the score at 3 and led to the departure of Express goalie Bryan Schoen in favor of Dan Ryder.

However, Averill put in his first goal of the season, from the slot at 18:21 of the second, to give Roanoke a 4-3 lead through two periods. It was the Express' third power-play goal of the game.

Roanoke (3-1-0) concludes its four-game road swing tonight in Richmond and Saturday in Hampton Roads. \
