Augusta led the way with a 3-under-par 285, Maryland was next at 286, followed by Georgia Southern (287) and the Hokies (292). Among other state schools in the 21-team field, Richmond was at 295, Virginia Commonwealth at 300 and Liberty was at 306.
In the individual competition, Maryland's Dale Ponchock tied the tournament record with a 6-under 66. Virginia Tech's Brian Sharp and Curtis Deal were tied for sixth at 71. The other Hokies - Matt Martin, David Havens and Sean Farrell - each shot 75.
In Lynchburg, Lynchburg College and Eastern Mennonite advanced to today's Old Dominion Athletic Conference field hockey tournament finals by scoring shutouts in semifinal games Friday.
Lynchburg (13-4), the tournament's top seed, blanked Bridgewater 1-0, and second-seeded Eastern Mennonite (12-1-2) beat Randolph-Macon 2-0.
The championship game is at 1 p.m. at Lynchburg College.
