PATRICK MAN CHARGED IN BROTHER'S KILLING

A Patrick County man has been charged with stabbing his brother to death, authorities said Saturday.

Charles William Gates, 35, was being held in the Patrick County jail in lieu of a $75,000 bond on a charge of first-degree murder, Sheriff Jay Gregory said.

On Wednesday morning, the body of Silas Edgar Gates, 41, was found on the side of Virginia 740, near the Ararat home where both brothers lived with their parents. He had been stabbed in the chest. A trail of blood led from the body back to the house.

Gregory said police believe both men had been drinking before the killing, but declined to elaborate on a motive.
