MASON PAVES WAY FOR W&L

Tailback Tom Mason set single-game school records with 230 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns as Washington and Lee won for the first time this season, whipping Bridgewater 41-16 Saturday.

Mason, a senior, also set a single-game school record with 32 points, including a two-point conversion. He carried the ball 39 times.

The Generals (1-6 overall, 1-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) beat the Eagles (2-6, 1-3) for the first time since 1988. The 41 points were the most the Generals have scored since a 47-0 victory over Methodist in 1989.

Washington and Lee rolled up 333 rushing yards, and Brooks Fischer and Matt Reedy combined to complete 10 of 15 passes for 90 yards. Reedy was 5-for-5 for 48 yards. Generals fullback Wilson Moore caught seven passes for 64 yards.

The Generals jumped to a 21-3 halftime lead off three Mason touchdown runs. Bridgewater never got closer.

Bridgewater's Ronnie Howard rushed for 214 yards, the third time this season he gained more than 200 yards. Howard scored on runs of 58 yards and 1 yard. He has more than 3,000 yards rushing in his career. \
