VIRGINIAS TEAM BREAKS THROUGH IN GOLF EVENT

The Virginias team ended a 32-year drought by winning on the road Sunday in the 48th Virginias-Carolinas golf matches in Hanahan, S.C.

Richmond golfers David Partridge and Greg Bales gave the Virginias a 74-70 victory when they won the final hole of the final match to earn a tie in alternate-shot play.

Galax's Vinny Giles, who was 18 years old when a Virginias squad last won in the Carolinas in 1961, completed an unbeaten year in team play. Giles served as captain of the U.S. Walker Cup squad and the Virginia State Golf Association's Sumner Cup squad before playing on the Virginias team.

In Sunday's action, he combined with Mike Smith to tie Bill Smunk and David Strawn 3-3. Roanoke's Ned Baber and his partner, Frank Summers, defeated Bill Cox and Bob Murray 4-2 in seniors play.
