COURT UPHOLDS FIRING BY TERRY

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday let stand Mary Sue Terry's firing of an employee who refused to resign from the Richmond School Board.

The court declined to take up an appeal by James Laws, who worked for Terry when she was Virginia's attorney general.

Laws said he was disappointed by the court's action.

His lawyer, David Simonsen, said that if Republican Jim Gilmore wins election today as attorney general, he might "take a different approach" to Laws' case, and Laws might seek reinstatement.

Terry, a Democrat, resigned as attorney general to run for governor.

Terry fired Laws in July 1992, saying his school board service violated her policy on outside employment by staff members. Laws claimed in his lawsuit that his dismissal infringed on his protected rights of speech, conduct and association under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
