OBIT MARSHALL, MARY HELEN
MARSHALL, Mary Helen, 63, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, October 31, 1993,
after a lengthy illness. She was a native of Kentucky, a daughter of the late
George Gammon and Bertha Lively Marshall. She joined Virginia Tech's
Department of Clothing, Textiles and Related Art in the College of Home
Economics in the Fall of 1970. Miss Marshall was an instructor and extension
specialist and was instrumental in helping her college and department pass
several milestones. She was promoted to assistant professor in 1976, and in
1986, became head of the department and held that position until her
retirement in 1990. Miss Marshall was known for her expertise in planning,
developing and implementing clothing and textiles programs, apparel design and
construction, and instructional methods and materials. Throughout her career,
she maintained her strong interest in and support for 4-H programs, in
addition to her university commitment to extension. She last visited her
college during the celebration festivities for the rededication of Wallace
Hall in the Fall of 1992. She attended the tea held by the department for
donors to the Oris Glisson Historic Costume and Textile Collection, which was
established while she was department head. She was preceded in death by a
brother, George Edward Marshall and an infant sister. Surviving are two
sisters, Mildred Sellers, Longmeadow, Mass. and Ruth Carlisle, Memphis, Tenn.;
brother, Bob O. Marshall, Nebo, Ky.; special niece, Millie M. Bush,
Brooksville, Ky.; nephews, Edward Marshall, Mexico City, Mexico, Bobby
Marshall, Bolling Green, Ky., John Sellers, Pennsylvania, Phillip Marshall,
Georgia, Bobby J. Marshall, Ohio, James Lee Marshall, Kentucky, William Kay
Marshall, Kentucky. Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, November
3, at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Joe Maxwell officiating.
Interment will follow in the Odd Fellow Cemetery, Clay, Ky. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to the Virginia Tech Foundation and designated
for the Oris Glisson Historic Costume and Textile Collection. The family will
receive friends Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
