EPA ORDERS RECALL OF 36,000 CARS

The Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday recalled more than 36,000 Mitsubishi, Eagle and Plymouth 1990 vehicles because they failed to meet air-pollution standards.

The maker of the cars, Diamond Star Motors of Normal, Ill., is to notify all owners by mail by early next year and pay for repair of the defects, EPA said.

Affected are the 1990 model Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser with 2-liter turbocharged engines. California cars, however, are not included.

EPA tests found the cars had defective oxygen sensors that resulted in carbon monoxide emissions exceeding federal limits.
