CAVALIERS NIP RADFORD IN SOCCER

Jen Shutt drilled a shot past Radford goalkeeper Amy Pseja five minutes into the first overtime Tuesday to give Virginia a 1-0 victory over Radford in college women's soccer in Charlottesville.

The Cavaliers (9-8-2) outshot the Highlanders 30-2 in regulation, but Pseja kept the game scoreless with 15 saves. Virginia outshot Radford (15-2-2) 33-8 in the game.

In other sports:

Seventh-seeded Roanoke College heads into the Old Dominion Athletic Conference volleyball tournament with back-to-back victories.

The Maroons will be the hosts for the tournament, which begins at 5 p.m. Friday and concludes with the championship match at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bast Center. Roanoke (3-6 ODAC) will face second-seeded Bridgewater (8-1) at 7 p.m. Friday on Court Two.

In the other quarterfinals, top-seeded Guilford meets eighth-seeded Sweet Briar at 5 p.m. on Court One, fourth-seeded Washington and Lee takes on fifth-seeded Emory & Henry at 5 p.m. on Court Two and third-seeded Eastern Mennonite plays sixth-seeded Lynchburg at 7 p.m. on Court One. The semifinals are at 11 a.m. Saturday.

In Lexington, Mike Young scored with 2 minutes, 19 seconds left in the game as visiting VMI edged Washington and Lee 2-1 in men's soccer.

Dan Rhodes gave W & L (5-13) the lead 1:29 into the second half, but the Keydets (5-13-1) tied it on Jonathan Dano's goal eight minutes later.

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's soccer final between Roanoke College and Randolph-Macon has been rescheduled for 4 p.m. today in Ashland. The game was postponed Saturday because of rain.

In Woodbridge, E.C. Glass defeated Patrick Henry 8-1 in the semifinal round to eliminate the Patriots from the Northwestern Region girls' high school tennis competition. Sarah Miller gave Patrick Henry its only point, defeating Bryce Bendall 6-0, 6-2.

Wake Forest's basketball team has received a commitment from Tony Rutland, a second-team All-Group AAA selection last season for state champion Bethel High School of Hampton. Rutland, who averaged 20.8 as a junior and was rated the No. 99 prospect in the country by recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons, picked the Demon Deacons over Richmond and Auburn.

H. Dwight Rayfield, a sportswriter and editor in Danville and Martinsville for 20 years, died Sunday after a long illness. He was 49.

Rayfield started as a sportswriter with the Danville Register in the 1970s and later worked for the Martinsville Bulletin. He returned to the Register in 1982 as sports editor. When the Register merged with the Danville Bee in 1989, Rayfield became assistant sports editor of the combined paper.
