OBIT WAKELAND, FAY MATNEY

WAKELAND, Fay Matney, 76, of the Slate Creek area of Grundy, passed away Tuesday, November 2, 1993, following a lengthy illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Vinia Davis Matney. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and was a retired rural Mail Carrier for the United States Postal Service. She was a graduate of Grundy High School and was an active member of the Buchanan County Republican Party. She was a member of Grundy Baptist Church, where she had served as a teacher and Superintendent of the Beginners Sunday School Department. Mrs Wakeland was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Wakeland (February 17, 1974). She is survived by one daughter, Margaret Ann Wakeland, Grundy; one son, Jack L. Wakeland, Roanoke; two brothers, Sidney Matney, Pilgrim Knob, Ralph Matney, Scottsboro, Ala.; two granddaughters, Angie Mangano, Nashville, Tenn., Holly Wakeland, Blacksburg. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Edna Branham, Alta Cole and Jennie Compton. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, November 4, 1993, 2 p.m. at the Grundy Baptist Church, Grundy, with the Rev. Jimmy Davidson and Evangelist Michael Trent officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock. The body will remain at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel, where friends may call Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.; it will then be taken to the Grundy Baptist Church on Thursday at 12 noon to await the funeral hour at 2 p.m. Active Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary Pallbearers will be Deacons of Grundy Baptist Church. Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
