STAUNTON RIVER CLINCHES TITLE TIE

Deena Mitchell was perfect in a pair of one-and-one situations and Courtney Hurd scored four of her 10 points in overtime as Staunton River slipped past Brookville 67-59 on Tuesday night, wrapping up at least a tie for the Seminole District regular-season title.

Because of Nelson County's 61-38 victory over Appomattox, Staunton River will have to win at Jefferson Forest or get an upset by Rustburg over Nelson County on Thursday to clinch the title outright.

Tanya Nelms had 23 to become only the third player in Staunton River history to score more than 300 points in a season. She has 308. Mitchell finished with 16 points, and Kim English added 10. Hurd chipped in 11 rebounds to become the first girl with more than 200 boards in a season for the Eagles (17-2 overall and in the district).

The Eagles have won more games than any team in any sport in school history. Brookville (11-8, 11-8) rallied from six points down with three minutes left to force the overtime.
