8 UMW PICKETS CHARGED IN DEATH OF STRIKE WORKER

A federal indictment charging eight United Mine Workers pickets with conspiracy in the shooting death of a nonunion mine contractor is "welcome news," a spokesman for their employer says.

"All we have done since July is to cooperate with federal, state and local authorities in the investigation," Arch Mineral Corp. spokesman Blair Gardner said.

Eddie York, 39, an employee of Deskins Contracting Co. of Logan, was shot July 22 as he crossed a UMW picket line at the entrance to Arch Mineral's Ruffner mine near Yolyn in Logan County.
