HALL OF FAME HONORS HIGH SCHOOL GOLFERS

Ryan Ketron, talented William Byrd senior, says there are two big reasons why winning his second straight Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame Golfer of the Year title was not as satisfying as his first.

He didn't win the State Group AA title, and his Terriers did not repeat as state champions.

"Other than that, winning this year was just as satisfying," Ketron said. "There were a lot of low numbers shot out there this fall. I think overall there might have been better players. To be voted by the coaches as Golfer of the Year was a great honor."

Ketron, 17, is one of four repeaters from last fall's honor team - Lord Botetourt senior Scott Griffin, Glenvar junior Nick Varney, and Northside junior Brian Agee. Two newcomers are senior Chris Turner of Byrd and Northside junior Brian Hill.

Three underclassmen earned enough votes from the 10 Hall of Fame coaches to merit honorable mention: Mark Sweeney of Botetourt, Mark Baldwin of Patrick Henry and Doug Kenney of Cave Spring.

Tim Chocklett, who coached Byrd to the title in the preseason Bob McLelland Invitational which includes most of the Hall of Fame teams, was again voted Coach of the Year. His Terriers won the titles in both the Group AA Blue Ridge District season and tournament. Byrd was second in the region and the state. The all-stars and Chocklett will be honored at the annual Golf Hall of Fame banquet Wednesday at Holiday Inn/Tanglewood.

During the banquet, Billy King, a veteran Blue Hills pro, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as its 2lst member. King is the only club professional who has been connected with the Hall of Fame since its inception in 1975.
