SCOUTS TO AID CAMP RENOVATION

Camp Roanoke - the former YMCA camp west of Salem - has taken another step toward coming back to life.

Several Boy Scout troops have pledged to do renovation work at the camp during November and December.

And they may be heading toward a work jamboree next spring.

This possibility arose at a recent meeting called to line up people to help with the renovation.

Ricky Showalter, who is guiding the renovation work, said he was heartened by the turnout and expressions of interest by people who want to help.

He has set another meeting for Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Glenvar Branch Library.

Showalter is program coordinator for the Roanoke County Department of Parks and Recreation, owner of the Camp Roanoke property.

Camp Roanoke is adjacent to Spring Hollow reservoir. The camp has 10 cabins, a dining/kitchen hall, meeting lodge, picnic shelter and several hiking trails.

However, the camp has been closed and abandoned for a number of years. Showalter said most of the buildings are in great need of repair.
