CHRISTMAS STORE DONATIONS BEING TAKEN SATURDAY

Donations for the Community Christmas Store will be accepted Saturday at four Roanoke Valley locations.

Clothing, food and other items will be accepted between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Roanoke County Main Library on Virginia 419, WDBJ (Channel 7) at Towers Shopping Center, Vinton Farmers Market on Lee Avenue in Vinton and at West Salem Baptist Church on Turner Street in Salem.

The store, a volunteer organization to serve needy families at Christmas, will strive to make Christmas more joyful for families that qualify in Salem and Roanoke County. The store will be set up at Spartan Square on Salem's West Main Street during the Christmas shopping season.

Janie Whitlow, project chairwoman, said organizers hope the store can be expanded to cover the entire Roanoke Valley in future years.

This is the first year the store has operated in the Roanoke area, but similar ones have operated in Montgomery County and other localities.

The store needs items such as new winter clothing for adults and children, new toys, stuffed animals, sporting goods, and baby items such as strollers, car seats, clothing, canned foods, cereals and nonperishable food.

Used clothing that is clean and in good condition can be accepted, Whitlow said, even though the store is emphasizing new items.

The store will serve people who are cleared through social service agencies. Recipients will receive points, to be used as money in the store, based on their need. Whitlow said people can earn additional points by helping set up the store.

For more information on donating items, call Pat Dew at 389-1048. Questions about working at the store should be directed to B.J. Fasnacht at 380-2168.
