ASSISTED-LIVING CENTER TO OPEN TUESDAY

The Oaks, a new assisted-living center at Richfield Retirement Community west of Salem - and its unusual identifying brick wall - will be dedicated Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon.

The building will open the same day, and residents will begin moving in next week.

The $4 million structure is being dedicated to John B. Cocke Jr. of Roanoke, who was Richfield's chairman and director for 28 years.

It has 30 private and 30 semiprivate rooms and is designed to accommodate 90 people. The rooms have 400 to 440 square feet of floor space.

Other features are a 24-hour nursing staff, a dining room and a large lobby.

This is Richfield's second assisted-living center.

The other is the T. Stuart Payne Center, also honoring a longtime Richfield director. It opened in 1990.

"The Oaks" name comes from oak trees on the property and also was the name of an assisted-living center that was closed when the Stuart Payne center opened, according to information released by Richfield.
