Kiwanis club elects officers for 1993-94

The Kiwanis Club of the Roanoke Valley recently elected Donald Robins as president for 1993-94.

Other officers elected were: Rogers Jones, first vice president; James Fulglum, second vice president; Robert Turner Jr., treasurer; and Tom Hahn, secretary.

Those elected to the board of directors include: Carl Gray, Jim Krantz, Ed Kuzas, Ira Peters, Bud Feuer, Jack Sale, Loy Self and Jim Tapley.

Professor's book is finalist in competition

A collection of short stories, "Mother Rocket," by Rita Ciresi, assistant professor of English at Hollins College, is a finalist in the Los Angeles Times book competition.

"Mother Rocket" also won the Flannery O'Connor Award for short fiction.

Ciresi's poems and short stories have been published in numerous literary magazines.

She received a bachelor of arts degree in English from New College, a master's in English from the University of Iowa, and a master of fine arts in fiction writing from Penn State. In 1989, she received a master fellowship in fiction writing from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
