THEME PARK CONTRACTOR FINED IN DEATH

The employer of a man killed while working on a roller coaster at Busch Gardens has been fined $14,000 by the state for failing to maintain a safe workplace.

The state Department of Labor and Safety issued two citations Oct. 29 to International Service Systems Inc. The department found that the New York-based company also failed to provide protective equipment to employees working in hazardous areas.

George H. Brown, 63, died May 1 after being hit in the head by a passing car on the "Big Bad Wolf" roller coaster. The company said Brown was trying to remove a tree branch that was blocking the view of a security camera when he was struck by the roller coaster.

Company spokeswoman Pat Hildebrandt said Wednesday she had not seen the citation and could not immediately comment.

The department fined International Service because it was Brown's employer, department spokesman Harry Carver said.

Brown's family is suing Busch Gardens for $8 million, claiming the theme park's negligence caused the death. Busch Gardens declined to comment on the state fines. - Associated Press
