Each school is allowed to nominate one player, and the winner is chosen by a panel of sports writers and broadcasters from across the state.
Quarterbacks have won the first three awards - Shawn Moore and Matt Blundin of Virginia and Cary Perkins of Emory & Henry- and there's another talented group this year. The list includes Virginia State's Gregory Clark, Maurice DeShazo of Virginia Tech, William & Mary's Shawn Knight, Matt Montgomery of Hampton and Virginia's Symmion Willis.
Two runnuing backs who could figure in the voting are William & Mary's Derek Fitzgerald and Ronnie Howard of Bridgewater.
Virginia Tech center Jim Pyne, the Hokies' nominee last year, is having another strong season, as is Virginia offensive guard Mark Dixon.
Roman Gabriel will be the featured speaker at the club, and Ken Willard, another former professional football star, will be the master of ceremonies. In conjunction with the award, the Downtown Club will present a $1,000 scholarship to a Richmond-area high school student.
The award is named after William "Bullet Bill" Dudley, the only Virginian who is a member of both the college and professional football halls of fame.
