GOLDEN EAGLES CLINCH DISTRICT TITLE

Staunton River locked up its first regular-season girls' basketball district title since 1971 on Thursday night, whipping host Jefferson Forest 54-24.

The Golden Eagles also locked up a berth in the Region III tournament.

Staunton River (18-2 overall, 18-2 district) bolted to leads of 15-4 after one quarter and 35-8 after two quarters.

Tanya Nelms led all scorers with 19 points, 11 in the second quarter. Staunton River's starters played only one minute of the second half.

Timesland's fifth-ranked team used its matchup zone to force the Cavaliers (5-15, 5-15) into numerous second-quarter turnovers, many of which the Golden Eagles scored on.

\ Blacksburg 64\ Carroll County 30

HILLSVILLE - The Indians (20-1, 6-0) got 13 points from Lisa Price, 12 from Mary Thorn and 10 from Meredith Braine in taking their 20th victory of the season, a New River District win over the Cavaliers.

Blacksburg, ranked third in Timesland, used an up-tempo offense to take a 37-18 lead by halftime. Strong rebounding helped the Indians create fast breaks for easy baskets, and some points came off turnovers.

No one had more than eight points for Carroll County (9-10, 0-6).\ Liberty 68\ Altavista 51

ALTAVISTA - Shannon Jurkus scored 10 of her 18 points in the third quarter as the Minettes pulled away from the Colonels for a Seminole District win.

Liberty (15-5, 15-5) led 28-27 at halftime but pulled away with a 19-6 third period.

Kellea Whorley added 16 points for the Minettes, and Joanne Harris scored eight points and grabbed 15 rebounds.

Altavista's Brooke Mitchell led all scorers with 19 points. The Colonels are 5-15 and 5-15.

Floyd County83 Giles39 FLOYD - Brennen O'Neal had 16 points, 12 rebounds and six steals to lead the Buffaloes to a Mountain Empire District victory.

Floyd County (20-1, 18-0) led 44-12 at halftime, and the fourth-ranked team in Timesland never looked back.

Lynette Nolley added 13 points and Monica Lucas 10 for the Buffaloes.

Giles got 11 points from Debbie Snidow.

\ Radford 44\ Christiansburg 34

RADFORD - Charlee Taylor scored 18 points and sank 5-of-5 free throws in the fourth quarter to lead the Bobcats over the Demons in the New River District.

Radford (8-12, 4-2) got 13 points from Cathy Richardson. The Bobcats also had 15 steals.

Rebecca McNeil lead Christiansburg (10-11, 2-4) with 15 points.

Shawsville 53\ Grayson County 36

SHAWSVILLE - The Shawnees pulled away in the fourth quarter for a Mountain Empire District victory.

Kelley Ryan had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Robin Burdette added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Shawsville (13-7, 13-5). The Shawnees broke open a close game with a 19-6 fourth quarter.

Grayson County (3-17, 3-15) got 13 points from Tia Stewart.

\ Galax 42\ Narrows 29

NARROWS - Tammy Cox and Jaclyn Dickens combined for 31 points as the Maroon Tide won a Mountain Empire District game.

Galax (12-6 in the district) led by 13 points at halftime and didn't allow the Green Wave to score in double figures in any quarter.

Narrows (10-10, 9-9) got 16 points from Melinda Fleeman.

\ Craig County 48\ Bath County 41

NEW CASTLE - The Rockets' press helped them to a huge fourth quarter and a Pioneer District victory over the Chargers (3-15, 1-11).

Craig County (6-12, 5-7) trailed 37-31 after three quarters but used a stifling press to cause seven Bath County turnovers in the final period.

Chrissy Robertson led the Rockets with 15 points, and Bonnie Boardwine added 11 - five in the final period.
