POTENTIAL CANDIDATES FOR CITY COUNCIL IN MAY

John Edwards: A lawyer who has been appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Beverly Fitzpatrick Jr. Edwards has worked in Democratic politics for years.

\ Steve Goodwin: Supervisor for the Department of Motor Vehicles. Unsuccessfully tried for the Democratic nomination for a council seat last year.

\ The Rev. Nelson Harris: Pastor of Ridgewood Baptist Church. He is on the School Board and is known to be interested in politics.

\ James Harvey: A corporate pilot and rental property owner, he is finishing his third term on council. He recently had surgery for lung cancer, but he made a quick recovery and has resumed his duties.

\ Beverly Lambert: A Republican candidate who received nearly 7,000 votes in a bid for council last year. She is a former aide to Del. Steve Agee, R-Salem.

\ Howard Musser: A council member for almost 12 years, he lost a bid this week for commissioner of revenue. He could not campaign because he was in the hospital recovering from a stroke.

\ James Trout: Former council member who lost a bid for re-election last year. He is a retired economic development specialist for Norfolk Southern Corp.

\ Audrey Wheaton: Retired associate director of the YWCA of Roanoke Valley. Democratic leaders mention her name, but she said health may not permit her running.

\ William White: Completing his first term on council after serving five years on the School Board. He says he will run. He is a partner in Saunders & White Certified Public Accountants.

\ Linda Wyatt: A Roanoke teacher who has been active in the Roanoke Education Association.
