THOMAS HEADS FCS RACING FIELD

Former Winston Cup Rookie of the Year Ronnie Thomas of Christiansburg headlines the field for the Thunder Road 500 this weekend at Franklin County Speedway in Callaway.

Thomas is a frequent winner in the Late Model Stock Car division at New River Valley Speedway in Radford.

Racing begins tonight at 7 with non-winners' races in all classes except Any Car. Any driver who did not record a victory at FCS during the 1993 season is eligible. The Late Model race will be 25 laps, and the other divisions will run 10 laps. Admission is $5; children under 10 are free.

Qualifying will be held tonight for the pole position of Saturday's 200-lap Late Model feature. For other positions, drivers have the option of letting their times stand or they can qualify again on Saturday.

Saturday's races will start at 3 p.m. and will count as double points. The 200-lap Late Model shootout will pay $3,000 to the winner.

All other divisions, including Any Cars, will run 35 laps. The Any Car prize will be $1,000.

Saturday's admission for adults will be $10. Gates will open at 11 a.m., and practice and qualifying will begin at 1 p.m.

In other auto racing:

The sixth annual New River Valley Speedway awards banquet is scheduled Friday, Dec. 10, at the Salem Civic Center. The event begins at 6 p.m. with a social hour, with dinner at 7. Awards presentations take place at 8. The five track champions will be honored and other special awards will be presented by Ronnie Snoddy and John Frazier, new track owners. A dance will conclude activities.

Tickets may be obtained by calling the speedway during office hours.
