WHO WOULD YOU CARVE IN STONE?

Bonnie Raitt?

Maybe Don Beyer knows something the rest of us don't.

Then again, maybe the lieutenant governor ought to stick to politics.

What do you think?

When asked by a Richmond radio station during his re-election campaign who he would pick for the Mount Rushmore of Rock 'n' Roll, if there was such a monument, Beyer answered: Mick Jagger, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton - and Bonnie Raitt.

Nothing against Bonnie Raitt, but does she really rank? Or is that like adding Ronald Reagan to the 60-foot-tall busts of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt that currently adorn the real Mount Rushmore?

Do you see any glaring oversights?

Who would you have carved in stone on the Mount Rushmore of Rock 'n' Roll?

Don Beyer had his reason for his four picks: "Because you've got to have a little blues."

What are your reasons?

Tell us by Nov. 15. You can call InfoLine (981-0100 in the Roanoke Valley, 382-0200 in the New River Valley), enter 7821 and then leave a message with your picks; or write: Mount Rushmore of Rock 'n' Roll, Features Department, Roanoke Times & World-News, P.O. Box 2491, Roanoke, Va. 24010.

Give us your names if you have the guts. Don't bother if you're too embarrassed to admit that you're some sort of Bay City Rollers freak.

This is your chance to etch your rock 'n' roll colors forever into granite. Anyone who also wants to donate a mountainside and an excavating crew for the cause is certainly welcome.

Otherwise, our crack team of staff artists will take the winners and create an illustration of what the proper Mount Rushmore of Rock 'n' Roll should look like. It will be published in the coming weeks, along with some of your responses.

But beware, this is not a popularity contest. Who gets the most votes will be taken into consideration, but it will not be the final, deciding factor.

More important to the judges will be the creativity, intuitiveness and persuasiveness of your comments. Any Mount Rushmore of Rock 'n' Roll sketches of your own gladly will be accepted.

Meanwhile, we will work on assembling a panel of judges to sort through the balloting.

Maybe you would like to be a judge? Nominate yourself. Tell us what makes you such an authority.

Maybe we should enlist Don Beyer, since he started all of this.
