SUSPECT IN DECAPITATION ORDERED HELD WITHOUT BOND

A man charged with the decapitation killing of a 20-year-old Navy wife at a military housing complex has been ordered held without bond after pleading innocent in federal court.

U.S. Magistrate Tommy E. Miller on Thursday set a Jan. 3 jury trial for Mark C. Poe, 21.

Poe originally was arrested on a state charge of capital murder, but local prosecutors decided their best case was only a first-degree murder charge.

The case was then moved to federal court to take advantage of its no-parole policy. Authorities believe the murder occurred on federal property.

The victim, Judy B. Greer, was reported missing in late April. Within days, Greer's body was found in a Suffolk lake and her head in a swampy area of Virginia Beach. Poe, her neighbor at the housing complex, was arrested a short time later.

Four months before the slaying, Poe had been charged with the statutory rape of a 13-year-old neighbor and released on bond. He will be tried on that charge Nov. 18.
