MAROONS GET NCAA SOCCER WIN

Roanoke College made sure its first NCAA soccer tournament game wasn't its last.

Abraham Cortez scored on a corner kick at 59 minutes, 47 seconds into the game as the No. 19 Maroons edged No. 13 Methodist 1-0 in a Division III South Region playoff game played in Fredericksburg.

Roanoke (19-3) advanced to a second-round game today at 1 p.m. against the winner of Saturday's Mary Washington-Virginia Wesleyan match.

Maroons goalie Rick Keeley posted his ninth shutout for the season. Methodist finished the season at 14-4.

In Raleigh, N.C., Paige Coley scored in the first six minutes of the game, and North Carolina, the nation's top-ranked team, went on to whip Virginia 3-0 in a women's Atlantic Coast Conference semifinal tournament game.
