SCHOOL BOARD VOTE PLANNED IN '94

Supporters of elected school boards in Wythe County were unsuccessful in getting the option on the ballot in time for Tuesday's election. But it will be there next November.

Backers of a referendum used this election as an opportunity to get voters to sign the necessary petitions to get the matter on the 1994 ballot. They stationed themselves at polling places to get the signatures.

Petitions with 10 percent of the registered voters in a locality are required for such referendums to be scheduled. A petition drive last summer did not get that number but Tuesday, with plenty of qualified voters on hand, the job was easier.

The signatures must next be checked and certified by the county registrar. Then they will go to the circuit judge who will order the selection process to be put on the ballot.

Currently, Wythe County School Board members are appointed by the county Board of Supervisors.
