Now that the Maroons are there, they don't want to go home.
Dustin Fonder scored one goal and set up another as 19th-ranked Roanoke rolled past rival Virginia Wesleyan 3-0 on Sunday in the South Regional final at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg.
The Maroons (20-3) advance to a quarterfinal match against fifth-ranked UC-San Diego, which defeated 15th-ranked Colorado College 1-0. The date has not been determined for the match in San Diego.
After a scoreless first half, Fonder set up a goal by freshman Dennis Yanco at 1 minute, 41 seconds of the second half.
"The pace of the game was really slow in the first half," said Scott Allison. "The field was in poor condition, and both teams were physically and emotionally drained from yesterday [Roanoke's 1-0 victory over Methodist and Virginia Wesleyan's 3-1 overtime upset of host Mary Washington]. At the break, I told the team we needed to pick up the pace in the second half.
"We got a quick throw-in to Dustin, who hurried the ball up the field and crossed it over to Dennis, who was all alone. He was so open he had no choice but to score."
Abraham Cortez, who scored the Maroons' goal in Saturday's victory over Methodist, made it 2-0 nearly 10 minutes later.
Fonder sealed the victory with a goal at the 58:13 mark.
Rick Keeley made three saves en route to his 10th shutout of the season.
Allison said he doesn't care who Roanoke meets next in the NCAA Tournament.
"We're excited. We're excited to take on whoever shows up," Allison said. "After what this team accomplished this weekend, we feel we can play with any team in the country."
