PARTRIDGE WINS MID-AMATEUR GOLF TITLE

Richmond's David Partridge added the Virginia State Golf Association Mid-Amateur title to his 1993 State Amateur championship Sunday, winning by two strokes over Roanoke's Mike Smith and Springfield's Scott Inman in Manassas.

Partridge, who shot a final-round 76 on the par-72 Robert Trent Jones Golf Club course, finished with a 54-hole total of 220. Smith (73) and Inman (76) finished at 222.

In Chapel Hill, N.C., the Virginia Tech men's tennis team made a strong showing during the weekend at the Rolex Regionals.

In doubles, the Hokies' Scott Cuppett and Miki Pusztai advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 victory over Virginia's Richard Roy and Dan Lehman. Cuppett and Pusztai then dropped a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 decision to Georgia Tech's Scott Cotton and Rob Givone, the 21st-ranked duo in the nation.

In singles, Cuppett defeated Virginia's Scott Lebovitz 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 in the first round, then was beaten 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 by Virginia Commonwealth's Jonas Emblad. Tech's Oliver Mayo was ousted by Duke's Phillippe Maggio 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the first round.

The Radford women's tennis team finished second during the weekend at the Jaguar Intercollegiate Tournament at Augusta (Ga.) College.

The Highlanders won three flights as they finished behind Georgia College in the eight-team competition. In Flight No. 3, Elize Dondero defeated Alyson Tindall of Georgia College. In Flight No. 6, Alex Woodberry beat Susie Hilburn, also of Georgia College. Catarin Becker and Dondero won the doubles flight in a pro set, defeating Tina Palethrope and Ina Rudzinski of Georgia College.

The Radford women's basketball team is the No. 2 choice in the Big South Conference preseason poll.

UNC Greensboro received 191 points and the Highlanders had 184 in balloting by the conference's coaches and sports information directors. Towson State was third, with 144 points, followed by Campbell (120), Maryland-Baltimore County (111), Liberty (108), Coastal Carolina (88), Winthrop (79), Charleston Southern (49) and UNC Asheville (26).

The Big South sports information directors named Radford's Shannan Wilkey to the preseason all-conference team. The senior guard-forward averaged 17.3 points last season and was the tournament's MVP.

Davis H. Elliott Co. outslugged the Roanoke Royals 13-12 in the Roanoke Valley League championship game of the National Adult Baseball League.

Eddie Sutphin scored three runs and Keith Graybill doubled home the game-winner for the fourth-seeded team in the over-30 league. Tito Rodriguez hit a solo homer for the Royals, seeded second.

Five former Ferrum baseball standouts now playing in the minor leagues will participate in an autograph session from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Comfort Inn of Rocky Mount.

The five players are Kevin Alger (Class A, Philadelphia), Darren Hodges (Class AA, New York Yankees), Randy Lawrence (Class A, Boston), Eric Owens (Class A, Cincinnati) and Billy Wagner (Class A, Houston). For more information, call the Ferrum alumni office at 365-4216.
