MUZZLELOADER FINDS MEAT TO MIX WITH SALAD

When the muzzleloading season opened last week, Ronnie Powers got some meat to go with his salad.

Powers, who lives in Bedford County, killed a 13-point buck that his wife, Guyeannetta, had spotted several times eating greens in her garden. The trophy buck had an 18-inch spread.

John Scruggs of Alleghany County killed a 10-point buck reported to weigh 180 pounds.

Wayne Hutton, 16, of Roanoke got a hefty eight-point buck with his .50 caliber black-powder gun during a Bent Mountain hunt. The deer weighed 133 pounds.

The turkey kill appeared to be down the opening week of the season, but you wouldn't have thought that if you'd spotted Richard Wright, Ricky Wright and Kevin Wright coming from the woods in Botetourt County. Each toting a turkey.

``We busted up a flock and each one of us called one in,'' said Kevin.
