PEOPLE COLUMN

New York Post columnist Neal Travis gives a new spin to the Kennedy clan's opposition to John F. Kennedy Jr.'s possible nuptials with Daryl Hannah. Travis reports that the family fortune is down to about $300 million and that the pressure is on younger Kennedys to marry into some serious money.

\ Princess Diana, it seems, is always on public view.

The Sunday Mirror of London published pictures of her in scanty biking shorts and a revealing leotard working out in a London gym. The pictures were taken with a hidden camera installed by Bryce Taylor, owner of the L.A. Fitness Club in west London.

"I know people will hate me for what I have done, but I'm not ashamed," Taylor said. It was not disclosed how much Taylor was paid for the photos, but he admitted he did it for the money.

Princess Diana went to court Monday, outraged by the photographs. Diana's lawyer, Anthony Julius, said she would sue the gym and Mirror Group Newspapers.

\ Once again a British actress will have to brush up on her Southern drawl to play the role of Scarlett O'Hara, this time in a TV miniseries that picks up where "Gone With the Wind" left off.

Joanne Whalley-Kilmer, known for her call-girl role in the 1989 film "Scandal," will play the fiery belle brought to the screen by the late British star Vivien Leigh in the 1939 "GWTW" movie, producers said Monday.

The eight-hour CBS-TV miniseries "Scarlett" is based on Alexandra Ripley's best-selling sequel to Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With the Wind."

\ Twenty-four years after Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda hit the road together in "Easy Rider," they did it again, leading thousands of leather-clad bikers Sunday in a roaring procession to raise money for charity.

As grand marshals of the 10th annual Love Ride in Los Angeles, Hopper and Fonda led about 17,000 bikers on the 50-mile ride that ended with a barbecue feast and a concert headlined by Dwight Yoakam. The ride was expected to raise more than $1 million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, organizers said.
