The seminar is the second in a series sponsored by the agency as it revises its 10-year management plan for the 708,000-acre forest in Southwest Virginia.
Employees of the Jefferson will discuss the issue of below-cost timber sales, in which the agency spends more on administering sales than it makes by selling the publicly owned timber to private logging companies. The Clinton administration has called for an end to the practice, which has long been a source of controversy between the U.S. Forest Service and environmentalists.
Pros and cons of different harvesting methods also will be discussed, as well as how sites are determined to be suitable for timber harvesting.
The seminar will begin at 7 p.m. at the Sheraton Airport Inn Hotel. The public is invited to attend. Call David Olson at (703) 982-6203 for more information.
