OBIT-THOMAS, FRANK

THOMAS, Frank, 88, of Rocky Mount, died Sunday, November 7, 1993. He was born in Troy, Kan., on October 31, 1905, a son of George and Elizabeth Thomas. Mr. Thomas, a Kansas educator for 25 years, was a school superintendent from 1929 to 1954. He spent 44 years in the field of education. He was a graduate of the College of Emporia, Kansas, the University of Kansas and spent five summer sessions at the University of Wisconsin, where he studied International Law and many aspects of Rural Education. In 1954, he became associated with the United States Office of Education in Washington, D.C., as a Program Specialist in the Teacher Exchange section of the Institute of International Studies. Mr. Thomas worked with 17 European countries, as well as Far Eastern countries. He traveled extensively under the Fullbright Exchange Program for 19 years. He married Irene E. Thompson on May 19, 1935. Mrs. Thomas, a retired school teacher, preceded him in death on September 28, 1993. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas were faithful members of the Gogginsville United Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Dr. Leann Martin of New Orleans, La. and Linda Lou Block of Manassas, Va.; five grandchildren, Anne Martin McCool of Anacortes, Wash., Scott S. Martin of Seattle, Wash., Rhonda Dickey of Boones Mill, Va., Matthew T. Powell of Roanoke, Va. and Eric D. Powell of Fredericksburg, Va.; seven great-grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 10, from the Gogginsville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Stanley Wright officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Gogginsville United Methodist Church Tuesday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Gogginsville United Methodist Church (R.F.D. #4, Rocky Mount, Va., 24151). Lynch Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
