OBIT-LUCAS, SAMUEL, ("BIG SAM")

LUCAS, Samuel, ("Big Sam"), 62, of Radford, died Monday, November 8, 1993 at his home after a long illness. He was the son of the late Dr. Ford K. Lucas and the late Elrica Shelburne Lucas Mosely. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Davis C. Lucas, Cloverdale. He is survived by his wife, Vanessa York Lucas, Radford; one son, Samuel Shelburne Lucas, Christiansburg; three daughters and son-in-laws, Vanessa and Michael Morrison, Virginia Beach, Mary and Neil Edwards, Christiansburg, Anne and Scott Hughes, Roanoke; three grandsons, Christopher, James Samuel, and Matthew Morrison, Virginia Beach; stepmother, Julia B. Lucas, Blacksburg. Mr. Lucas was a graduate of VPI with a degree in Agriculture and Economics and from East Tennessee State with a degree in Industrial Arts. He served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force during the Indo-China conflict. In 1991, Mr. Lucas retired from the Montgomery County School System after 30 years of teaching Industrial Arts. Mr. Lucas was an accomplished athlete beginning with his high school days at Blacksburg High, continuing through his college days at Virginia Tech and throughout his military service. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Joe McCoy and Pastor Bob Ferguson with burial in the Lucas Family Cemetery. The family asked that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the New River Valley Hospice or the Old Brick Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 Tuesday evening at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg.
