HALLOWEEN RUN WON BY HUSBAND, WIFE

BEN THOMAS and ALICE THOMAS are afraid of ghosts and goblins.

The husband and wife are fast enough to run away from the spooks over a long distance. They proved that by winning the men's and women's races in the Haunted Halloween Run for Your Life 5K, held Halloween afternoon in Blacksburg.

Ben Thomas finished the road race in a time of 15 minutes, 59 seconds. JAY JOHNS came in second in the men's race (16:19) and ERIC MYERS third (16:48).

Alice Thomas captured the women's race in 19:25. JENNIFER ANTAB finished second (21:32) while SHARON HUDSON (24:19) was third.

Age group winners in the men's race were RICK DEVENS (9-and-under), BRIAN WHEELER (10-13), RICHARD BONFANTI (14-17), JIMMY OSBOURNE (18-22), JAMES COLLIER (23-29), JIM BERKELMAN (30-34), ALAN RAFLO (35-39), THOMAS INZANA (40-44), JACK WEBSTER (45-49) and PAUL SMEAL (60-69).

The women's age group winners were KELLY CLARK and KYM DEVENS (10-13), KATY DEVENS (14-17), CHERYL SABEN (18-22), COLLEEN PROSSER (23-29), CARL MILDER (30-34), JOAN ROWE (40-44) and BETTY SEGAR (45-49).

The late-season run for the jack-o-lanterns attracted 57 runners from throughout the area.

RADFORD RESULTS: First Baptist edged Zion Hill-First Baptist, 59-56, to take sole possession of first place in the Church Basketball League. Both teams entered the showdown with perfect 5-0 records.

The Jetsetters (11-1) won all three of their matches last week to take over sole possession of first place in the Co-Ed Volleyball League. Athlete's Choice (10-2) moved into second place when they beat former co-leader Side Out (9-2), two games to one.

\ UPCOMING IN CHRISTIANSBURG: Winter sports in Christiansburg means wrestling and and basketball. And its the time of year to plan trips next spring. For more information, call Chuck Muncy, the supervisor of athletics with the Parks and Recreation Department, at 382-2349.

Registration continues through Nov. 29 for the youth wrestling league. Participants must be between the ages of 6 and 13 (as of March 1, 1994) and cannot be in the eighth grade. The fee is $20 for residents and $25 for non-residents which pays for a singlet for each wrestler.

Registration continues through Dec. 17 for five adult basketball leagues. The leagues are men's slowbreak open, men's slowbreak over-30 open, men's slowbreak church, women's slowbreak open and women's slowbreak church. The fee is $230 per team plus a $10 per person non-resident fee.

The department will hold meetings for youth basketball coaches Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at the Recreation Center at 5:45 p.m. each day. Coaches will be able to be certified by the National Youth Sports Coaches Association, rules will be discussed and the date for the draft will be set. Both meetings are mandatory.

The department is accepting registration through Dec. 3 for trips to two NASCAR Winston Cup races next year.

The first trip planned is to the Goodwrench 500 on Feb. 27, 1994, in Rockingham, N.C., and will cost $80. The second trip is to the Transouth Financial 400 on March 27, 1994, in Darlington, S.C., and will cost $85.

Costs include race ticket and transportation. Anyone under 21 must be accompanied by a paying adult on the trips. Registration is limited to 20 people.

UPCOMING IN RADFORD: Basketball for the young and the not-so-young are on the winter schedule in Radford. For more information, call the Radford Department of Parks and Recreation at 731-3633.

The recreation department will offer youth basketball in three age groups: rookie for ages 7-9 (all ages as of Jan. 1, 1994), midget for 9-11 and junior for 11-14. The cost is $5.

There will an organization meeting for men's and women's adult basketball leagues Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. at the recreation department. Teams which plan to play in the league should have a representative at this meeting.

UPCOMING IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY: Montgomery County residents also will get the chance to follow the bouncing ball this winter. For more information, call Tim Cooney, the athletic supervisor with the Montgomery County Parks and Recreation Department, at 382-6975.

Registration continues through Nov. 30 for youth basketball in five age groups. Pee-wee clinics for those ages 6-8 (all ages are as of March 1, 1994) and all first graders will be held Saturday mornings starting Jan. 8, 1994.

The junior boys and girls leagues are for youths ages 9-10. The sandlot leagues are for boys and girls ages 11-12, although seventh graders may move up to the senior league. The senior boys and girls leagues are for youths 12-14 who are not on their school's eighth grade team and not in the ninth grade.

The high school leagues are for boys and girls in grades 9-12 not playing high school basketball.

The cost is $15 for the high school league and $10 for the other leagues and the clinics. The youth basketball is co-sponsored with the Christiansburg Department of Parks and Recreation.

Registration continues through Nov. 30 for men's and women's fastbreak basketball leagues which will begin play in January. Games will be Monday and Wednesday nights at Christiansburg Middle School. The cost is $220 per team.
