RETIREMENT CENTERS A TIMELY TOPIC

By 2010, nearly 15 percent of the American population will be over 60.

"WHAT SENIORS SHOULD LOOK FOR IN A RETIREMENT CENTER" is the title of a talk being sponsored by the Blacksburg American Association of Retired Persons chapter 2613. David Murray of Warm Hearth Village will be the speaker.

All seniors are invited to this brown bag lunch session on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Blacksburg Community Center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive. Makings for hot coffee and tea will be provided. For more information, call Janice Palmer, 951-2886.

The RETIRED AND SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY AND RADFORD celebrated two decades of community service at a luncheon recently.

Nancy Glisson, the reigning Miss Virginia and a 1993 Virginia Tech graduate told the luncheon gathering of about 250 people that she hopes to serve "as your ambassador, not only on the state level but on the national level as well."

"I will be following in your footsteps," she continued. "Both of us can make a difference in this journey."

Del. Joan Munford (D-Blacksburg) quoted Calvin Coolidge: "A man is never honored for what he gets. A man is honored for what he gives."

Montgomery County Administrator Betty Thomas thanked RSVP for its help in recent county mass mailings of informational brochures.

In letters, both President Bill Clinton and Gov. Doug Wilder congratulated the volunteers on their 20 years of service.

"You are creating a brighter future for all of us," the President wrote.

"Our society benefits from your experience and guidance," Wilder said in his reply.
