BASSETT CRUISES IN TOURNAMENT

Bassett got off to a quick start and before it was over, everybody on both benches had played as the Bengals tore up guest Patrick County 61-43 in a Piedmont District tournament quarterfinal Tuesday night in Bassett.

Lori Wimbush led the Bengals (21-0), Timesland's top-ranked team, with 15 points and Kim Hairston chipped in 11. Patrick County was paced by Amy Nelson with 10 points.

Top-seeded Bassett plays No. 4 Magna Vista, which beat Chatham 55-50 Tuesday, at 6 p.m. Thursday on the Warriors' floor. \

Magna Vista 55, Chatham 50: The Warriors used free throws to capture a win in the quarterfinal round of the Piedmont District at Ridgeway.

Magna Vista sank 14 of 30 free throws en route to victory. Tonya Zehr scored 18 points for the Warriors and Tina Johnson had all seven of her points in the second half.

Juanita Crews scored 15 and Jion Word chipped in 14 for the Cavaliers.

Fourth-seeded Magna Vista will face top-seeded Bassett in a semifinal game Thursday at 6 p.m. at Ridgeway. \

Blue Ridge District

\ Northside 50, Rockbridge County 23: The Vikings got points from 12 players as they overpowered the visitors in a first-round game.

Shannon Yopp was the only double-figure scorer for Northside (10-11). She also helped the Vikings dominate the boards.

Rockbridge County (5-17) did not have player with more than five points.

\ Pioneer District

\ James River 52, Bath County 21: In Buchanan, intense James River pressure produced 28 steals and the Knights proceeded to the Pioneer District tournament opening round rout of Bath County.

Kara Mundy had seven of the steal, many of which led to easy baskets, and also scored 18 points to go with five assists for the Knights (13-8). Angie Johnson added 13 points for James River.

The Knights, the second seed, will play the winner of No. 3 Covington vs. No. 6 Highland in the second game of a semifinal doubleheader at James River.

Ricketta Ricketts led the seventh-seeded Chargers (1-20) with six points.

\ Monday's games

Mountain Empire District

\ Shawsville 56, Rocky Gap 47: In Max Meadows, the Shawnees used free throws to stymie a second-half rally by the Eagles on Monday night and advance to the third round.

Shawsville (14-5) outscored Rocky Gap 19-2 in the second quarter to take a 31-18 halftime lead. The Eagles (10-10) bounced back to cut their deficit to four points in the fourth quarter, but the Shawnees sank nine of 17 free throws to seal the victory.

Robin Burdette scored 18 points and Kelley Ryan had 15 for Shawsville.

The Shawnees will play the winner of today's Galax-Fort Chiswell game at 8 p.m. Thursday.

In another second-round game Monday night, Floyd County rolled over Giles 82-41. \

Hogoheegee District

\ Northwood 53, George Wythe 49: In Saltville, Stacy Green scored a game-high 16 points, but it wasn't enough to keep George Wythe alive in the Hogoheegee District tournament Monday night.

The Maroons (7-14) lost to Northwood, a team they had beaten on the same court less than a month earlier. The Panthers were paced by Heather Gillespie with 16 points and Jessica Prater with 12.
