OBIT COOLEY, GEORGE BURTON
COOLEY, George Burton, 66,of Hillsville, passed away Monday, November 8,
1993, at Twin County Community Hospital. Born November 28, 1926 in Carroll
County, he was the son of the late Alva Edison and Mary Kate McGlothlin
Cooley. After attending schools in Hillsville and graduating in 1944, he
enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp and served until 1946. In 1947, he
enrolled at the University of Virginia, where he obtained his undergraduate
and law degrees, and completed in 1952. Practicing law in Hillsville from the
time of his graduation, he was an active Democrat, promoter of youth
activities and community leader. In 1978 he was appointed a General District
Court Judge by the Virginia General Assembly, and in that capacity, served
until his retirement in 1992. He served as a substitute judge thereafter. A
lifetime member of the V. F. W. Post #1115 in Hillsville, he was a member of
the Hillsville Presbyterian Church, the Lions Club, the Elks Lodge, as well as
the Carroll County Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar. He is survived
by his wife, Lillian Pearle Wilson Cooley; a son and daughter-in-law, George
B. Jr. and Lisa Cooley; a sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Kenneth
Bernatz; a brother and sister-in-law, Raleigh M. and Marguerite Cooley; two
grandsons, George B. Cooley III and Eric A. Cooley, all of Hillsville. He is
also survived by two nephews and a great-niece. Funeral services will be 11
a.m. Thursday at the Hillsville Presbyterian church, conducted by the Rev.
James Carpenter. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside by the
Hillsville V. F. W. Post #1115. The family will receive friends at the church,
Wednesday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m. Although flowers would be appreciated, the
family requests that donations be made to the Hillsville Rescue Squad.
