He found 133 gallons of corn liquor in a pickup truck that was abandoned by its driver after the truck had struck a utility pole on the narrow street.
Abshire was at the Floyd County Courthouse - about a block away - when he heard about the wreck.
The pickup truck had been traveling Oxford Street, an alternate route that avoids Main Street, when it struck a utility pole positioned between the sidewalk and the street.
Witnesses told police that the driver ``hustled away'' after the truck came to a stop.
The truck was registered to a Ferrum man. Abshire said that an investigation is continuing and that charges are pending.
Abshire said he suspects the liquor was being transported through Floyd County and was not necessarily destined for the county.
``This was Christmas liquor, all right,'' Abshire said.
But whoever was expecting the delivery will be disappointed.
All of the liquor - except for a small amount needed as evidence and for analysis - was thrown out.
