A TASTE OF HISTORY FOR WILLIAMSBURG

Colonial Williamsburg has been licensing reproduction furniture, candlesticks and clocks for 57 years. Now something is being brewed for a different palate, an ale "made in the 18th-century fashion."

Make that sort of in the 18th-century fashion, said Jerry Bailey, president and part owner of Old Dominion Brewing Co. in Loudoun County. The company shipped the first 21 cases last week to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, operator of the museum village and related tourism businesses.

While the microbrewery does not pasteurize (heat) the beer, it uses hops from England, malted barley and no preservatives. "There are major differences in how they made ale then and now," he said. "A high proportion of their beer was probably infected because they hadn't found out about bacteria." Stainless steel solves the bacteria problem.

The newest addition to the Tavern Food Line, Chowning's Tavern Ale is being sold - for $2.25 a bottle - only in the historic area in the four restaurants and at Dubois Grocer's Shop. The rest of the line includes root beer, barbecue sauce and raspberry jam.
