Sheriff Ken Phipps and his deputies are unsure whether both killings were intentional, but it appears the dog was a definite target.
The retriever was found Monday morning on the side of Craigs Mountain Road in the Sugar Grove area with a piece of cord wrapped around its four legs, Phipps said.
The two-year-old dog had likely been shot in a nearby ravine and then left on the shoulder of the road.
The dog, which belonged to Tracie Taylor, was found a little less than a mile from its home.
"It looked like a deliberate act," Phipps said. "They weren't covering it up. They wanted it to be seen."
The retriever was shot in the shoulder. A broken half of an arrow has been recovered.
The dead cow, which belonged to Luther Nolley of the 3700 block of Nolley Road, was reported Nov. 6. Nolley believes the cow was killed the previous night.
The cow was found near a creek with an arrow in its side.
Nolley Road is west of Sugar Grove, where the dog was killed.
It is unclear whether the two shootings are related.
"The thing that concerns us is you have an individual running around shooting domestic animals for the sport of it," Phipps said.
The sheriff asks that anyone who may have information about either shooting call his office at 382-6906 or 382-2951.
