MARTINSVILLE ROLLS TO EASY VICTORY IN PIEDMONT PLAY

Samantha Ferguson scored 13 points and had 15 assists and seven steals as second-seeded Martinsville rolled past Gretna 68-49 Wednesday night to grab a semifinal berth in the Piedmont District girls' basketball tournament.

The Bulldogs led 35-17 at halftime and coasted to the win.

Kenya Hairston scored 15 points to lead Martinsville and Erica Brandon chipped in 14.

With 18 points, Charita Dews was the lone double-digit scorer for Gretna.

The Bulldogs will play Laurel Park tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Magna Vista.

Piedmont District

Laurel Park 65, Fieldale-Collinsville 50: Torsheda Dillard scored 12 of her 18 points from the free-throw line as the Lancers defeated the Cavaliers in the second round of the Piedmont District playoffs.

Third-seeded Laurel Park led 34-22 at halftime and held off Fieldale-Collinsville for the win.

Tanesha Hairston had 16 and Toy Perkins chipped in 14 for the Lancers.

Cicely Becker scored 17 points and T.J. Hayes added 11 for the Cavaliers.

Laurel Park will play Martinsville tonight at 7:30 p.m. in a semifinal game.

Mountain Empire District

Fort Chiswell 54, Galax 52, OT: In Fort Chiswell, Anesha Marshall scored the last two of her 23 points with four seconds left in overtime to give the Pioneers a victory over the Maroon Tide Tuesday night.

Tammy Cox, who finished with 20 points for Galax, hit a shot with five seconds left in regulation to force the extra period. Jaclyn Dickens added 16 points for the Maroon Tide.

Fort Chiswell advances to meet Shawsville in a semifinal tonight at 8 on the Pioneers' court.

Pioneer District

Covington 62, Highland 45: Michelle Jeter scored 15 points and Nancy Shawver added 14 as the Cougars defeated the visiting Rams in the first round of the Pioneer District playoffs Tuesday night.

Covington led 22-19 at the half and used a full-court press in the third quarter to force turnovers. The Cougars outscored Highland 18-7 in the third quarter and held on for the win.

Amy Arbaugh scored 17 points and April Rexrode had 13 for the Rams.

Covington will face James River in a semifinal game tonight at 8:30.
