Richmond led 5-4 entering the third period but scored six times, including two empty net goals five seconds apart that tied an East Coast Hockey League record for the quickest pair of goals in league history.
The Express played the game without captain Dave "Moose" Morissette. ECHL Commissioner Pat Kelly on Wednesday suspended Morissette indefinitely for jumping Charlotte forward Jason Clarke during Tuesday's game.
The Express signed 30-year-old Dan Dorion, who became the first Express player to have played in the NHL. Dorion played seven games for the New Jersey Devils in 1988, scoring two goals. Express coach Frank Anzalone has five games to determine whom to drop from the Express' 18-man roster.
Roanoke fell behind 1 minute, 40 seconds into the game on Jim Ballantine's wrist shot and was down 2-0 less than two minutes later.
But the Express tied the game with power play goals 34 seconds apart. Dorion assisted Lev Berdichevsky at 5:28, and Oleg Yashin put one just under the crossbar at 6:02.
Richmond's Darren Colbourne added to his ECHL-leading goal total by slipping a Brendan Flynn pass through the legs of Ryder, Colbourne's 14th goal, at 13:57 for a 3-2 Renegade lead.
Ballantine completed his hat trick at 1:41 while on a three-on-one with Phillips and Brendan Flynn for a 6-4 lead, but Roanoke's Conrade Thomas scored at 2:54.
Phillips then took control, feeding Roger Larche on an end-to-end, two-on-one rush at 4:03, then scoring his second of the night at 6:06 from the high slot for an 8-5 lead.
With Roanoke trailing 9-6, Anzalone, who earlier had received his first bench penalty of the season for screaming at referee Matt Dunne, pulled Ryder in favor of a sixth attacker. Alan Schuler then buried his third goal of the season into the empty net at 16:07 while on a shorthanded, three-on-one rush. After the ensuing center-ice draw, with Ryder still on the bench, Jeff Marshall received the puck at his own blue line, and lifted a 90-foot bomb into the empty target.
The Express, who outshot the Renegades 36-34, fell for the fifth straight time on the road and is 4-7-0 overall. Roanoke remains two points ahead of last place Richmond, which improved to 3-5.
