PLANNERS OK BATTLEFIELD RACETRACK

A Formula One auto racetrack planned for the site of the Civil War's largest cavalry battle has won the approval of the Culpeper County Planning Commission.

Benton Ventures Inc. of Bethesda, Md., wants to build the track on industrially zoned land owned by developer Lee C. Sammis. James Lazor, president of Benton Ventures, said he hoped to complete the project by early 1995.

Neighbors concerned about noise, traffic and crowds have objected to the track and preservationists have argued it would mar the battlefield.

Brandy Station was the site of the largest cavalry battle in North America. About 20,000 Union and Confederate troops clashed at the site on June 9, 1863. - Associated Press
